A good mentor is one of the most valuable and undervalued assets a founder can have. A mentor cannot build your company for you, and should not try, but the right one can help you avoid mistakes that would have cost you months, see around corners you cannot yet see, and open doors that would otherwise stay closed. In an underserved region, access to mentors is often the scarcest resource of all.
The core value a mentor offers is borrowed experience: someone who has already navigated the terrain you are entering can warn you about pitfalls, sanity-check your thinking, and share hard-won lessons you would otherwise learn the expensive way. Beyond advice, mentors often provide perspective, calm judgment when you are too close to a problem, and connections, introductions to customers, investors, and talent that shortcut months of cold effort.
The best mentor relationships usually grow naturally from genuine connection rather than a formal ask, and the most useful mentors are those with relevant experience who are also willing to be honest with you rather than just encouraging. You want people who will tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. Founder programs and communities are a common way to find them, which is part of their value.
Mentorship is a two-way relationship that deserves care. Come with specific questions rather than vague requests for help, respect their time, act on the good advice, and report back, which mentors find rewarding and which deepens the relationship. And remember that mentors advise; you decide. A mentor's job is to inform your judgment, not replace it, and the best founders take counsel widely while owning the choices themselves.
