The first cohort of any program sets its character, so it is worth being clear about what Valley Tech Lab is actually looking for. The short version: not the most polished pitch, and not the most credentialed founder. The one who is already building, in the Valley, with something to show.
The single strongest signal is momentum. We would rather back a founder who has shipped a rough version of something real than one with an immaculate plan and nothing built. Planning is easy to fake and hard to learn from; building is the opposite. If you have put something in front of a customer, learned from it, and changed course, you have already demonstrated the thing that matters most, and the thing no application question can capture on its own.
Valley Tech Lab is a Rio Grande Valley program, and that is not a technicality. We are looking for founders who are building here and intend to keep building here, because the entire point is to prove that a serious company can start and stay in the Valley. That does not mean your market has to be local; your ambition should not be. It means your roots are here, and you see the Valley as an advantage to build from rather than a place to leave behind.
The last thing we look for is hard to score and easy to recognize: a founder who can hear a hard question without getting defensive, and who tells you the truth about what is not working. The program can help a coachable founder enormously and a defensive one almost not at all. We are building a cohort, not just selecting individuals, and the founders who make it better are the ones who show up honest, curious, and generous with each other.
Show us what you have built. That is the application.
