When to Raise Money

Raise from strength, not desperation, and only when capital is what actually unlocks the next step.

If a founder decides to raise outside money at all, the next question is when, and the timing matters enormously, for the terms you get and for whether raising is even the right move. The short version: raise from strength rather than desperation, and only when capital is genuinely what unlocks your next step.

Raise from strength

Fundraising is a negotiation, and leverage comes from not needing the money. The best time to raise is when the company is showing momentum, traction, growth, evidence the idea is working, so investors compete to be part of it, and when you still have enough runway to walk away from a bad deal. Raising when you are nearly out of cash, with nothing to show, is raising from weakness, which yields worse terms or no deal at all, exactly when you most need one.

Raise when capital unlocks something

Money should have a job. The right moment to raise is when you have found something that works and additional capital would let you do more of it faster, hire to meet real demand, scale a channel that is proven, build what customers are asking for. Raising before you know what works often just funds expensive guessing, and can lock in a valuation and expectations you have not earned. Capital accelerates a working engine; it does not create one.

Or not at all, yet

Sometimes the right answer is not yet, or not at all. Bootstrapping further increases what your company is worth and reduces how much you give up if you do raise later, and some businesses never need outside money. The discipline is to raise deliberately, when it serves a clear purpose and from a position of strength, rather than because raising feels like the expected next milestone. Timing done well can be worth as much as the money itself.

Raise when it unlocks the next step, and while you still can walk away.
